HuangshanMountainisrenownedforthebestmountain-oussceneryinChina.Thecomplexgeologicalhistorygavethemountainalandscapediversityofwaterfalls,caves,lakesandhotspringsspreadingoveranareaof15,400hectares.
Astrikingfeatureofthemountainouslandscapeisitsnumerousgraniticpeaks,77ofwhichexceed1,000metersinheight,withthehighestLotusPeakreach-ingupto1,864meters.Theirformationdatesback100millionyearstotheMesozoiceraasaresultofcrustalmovements.
Botanicalrichnessalsoaddstothecharm-themountainishometoanumberoflocallyornationallyendemicplantspeciesandone-thirdofChina鈥檚bryophytesandoverhalfofitsferns.Thevertebratefaunacom-prises300speciesincludingmammals,birds,reptiles,amphibiansandfishes,with13undernationalprotection.ButitisthepeaksemergingthroughaperpetualseaofcloudsthatarethesignaturesceneofHuangshanMountain,givingitacelestialcharm.
InalegenddatedfromtheTangDynasty(618-907),HuangshanMountainwasdescribedastheplacewherethelong-soughtelixirofimmortalitywasdiscovered.Sincethen,ithasattractedmanyvisitors,hermits,poetsandpainterswhowantedtoeulogizeitsbeauty,andassuchthemountainhasbeenplayinganimportantroleintheartsandliteratureofChina.Thenumerousancientgnarledtrees,alongwithgrotesquely-shapedrocks,inspiredtherenownedShanshui(mountainandwater)schooloflandscapepainting.DuringtheYuanDynasty(1271-1368),64templeswereconstructedonthemountain,makingitanimportantplacefortemplearchitectureaswell.
HuangshanMountainwaslistedonboththeWorldCulturalandNaturalHeritagelistsin1990.Withabufferzoneof14,200hectares,itisnowprotectedunderChineselawasanationalpark.
